doctor-tabletSmartphones and tablets have changed healthcare forever, making it easier for both patients and healthcare professionals to quickly look up medications and treatment options. Instead of flipping through a drug guide or medical dictionary, check out one of these apps below to save time and get up-to-date information:
  1. Epocrates. This app lists thousands of medications, including brand-name, generic and over-the-counter drugs, and features an interaction check and pill identifier. It also offers easy access to health insurance formularies and a provider directory. The basic app is free for both Apple and Android phones and tablets. The paid version also includes diagnostic information and a searchable disease database.
  2. Isabel. Developed by the parents of a three-year-old British girl named Isabel who nearly died in 1999 after being misdiagnosed, this app allows doctors to enter patients’ symptoms and search for possible diagnoses. It is meant to be used as a second check or reference for doctors, who can then narrow choices, and can be fully integrated with a facility’s electronic medical records (EMR) system.
  3. ResolutionMD. Have you ever waited a day or more for X-ray results because the radiologist was at a different hospital or out of town? Designed to integrate with an EMR system, this app provides doctors with a way to securely view X-rays from any smartphone, computer or tablet. ResolutionMD keeps patient data secure by restricting data from being downloading to a device and allowing administrators to control and set specific user access.
  4. Merck Manual. No need to flip through your hardcover copy at your desk anymore. The Merck Manual app includes a searchable database of hundreds of diseases and provides treatment options, clinical approaches to disorders and specific guidance on evaluating patients. The app can also be purchased with Davis’ Drug Guide and the Merck Manual of Patient Symptoms.
  5. MedCalc. This medical calculator gives you access to medical formulas, classifications, scales and scores. The app also supports both American and SI units and allows you to search for equations using names and keywords. Additionally, you can set a customizable list of favorite equations for quicker access.
