Learning clinical skills through locum tenens assignments

Working locum tenens assignments can be a great way to see how others approach and practice medicine. Dr. Madeline Geraghty found locums was an excellent way to both learn and teach.
“I think one of the nicest surprises for me about working locums was the reminder that there is more than one way to do things. When you stay at one place for a long time you get used to doing things one way,” said Geraghty. “You get used to doing things the same way over and over again until it just becomes habit and you don’t realize that you’ve been stuck in a rut. I didn’t know that this was going to be one of the nicest benefits of locums for me was just the reminder when I went to other places that there were other ways of doing things and that people had different practices and that kind of shook me out of my rut.”
She found she could learn from the different ways people did things but she also questioned some of the practices. This led her to research different practices and further learning. When appropriate she would use her knowledge to teach new and better practices to the different places where she had assignments.
“I didn’t know I was going to get that experience from locums and that actually is the thing that I like most now about doing locums,” she said. “It’s the reason why even though I’ve accepted a permanent position elsewhere I continue to do locums because I still like that experience.”
